Two 3i Infotech customers, Edward Jones and Conestoga Bank, will present the business case for remote deposit capture (RDC) at the RDC Summit this week. The event will be held tomorrow and Thursday at the Omni Orlando ChampionsGate in Orlando, Fla. 3i Infotech, including subsidiary J&B Software, will demonstrate its full suite of remote deposit capture (RDC) products in Booth #19.

“Edward Jones and Conestoga Bank are excellent examples of the tremendous benefits of RDC technology,” said James McShea, chief revenue officer, 3i Infotech, North America. “This technology is freeing companies and individuals from constraints such as geography and bank hours. It’s allowing them to deposit funds wherever and whenever they want, thereby accelerating cash flow while saving time and money.”

Edward Jones, a prominent retail investment firm, has deposited more than 5.5 million checks over the past two years using 3i Infotech’s eCapture product. eCapture is being used at more than 10,000 Edward Jones branch locations throughout the U.S.

eCapture quickly, accurately and securely captures images of paper check payments and validates the images for Check 21 compliance, meaning that an electronic copy is a legally acceptable replacement for the original paper version. Next, the transaction is processed by 3i Infotech’s workflow, risk management and clearing modules for business rules application, compliance and clearing purposes. The business rules, such as exception management and fraud monitoring, can easily be customized.

Edward Jones will present a case study about this deployment at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday. In the session, entitled “Advanced Corporate RDC Solutions – A Case Study,” Edward Jones will detail how it is leveraging RDC technology to streamline payments and receivables; integrate and automate data-intensive processes; improve liquidity management; make operations more efficient; improve cash flow; and deliver tangible results to the bottom line.

Conestoga Bank, a regional bank based in the Philadelphia area and another 3i Infotech RDC customer, will speak on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. Lori Adamski, executive VP and chief operating officer of Conestoga Bank, will participate in the session, “Mobile & Consumer RDC: Perspectives from Industry Leaders.” Conestoga Bank will begin offering 3i Infotech’s Mobile Check Deposit functionality to its customers later this fall. The product will allow Conestoga’s customers (businesses and consumers) to deposit paper checks anytime, anywhere via their smartphones.

Once a Conestoga customer photographs a check and submits it via his or her mobile device, 3i Infotech will validate the images for Check 21 compliance and perform workflow, risk management and clearing tasks.

3i Infotech will provide a safe and secure image capture and deposit experience for Conestoga customers. To ensure security, a complete audit trail of where, when and how each check was captured will be logged to allow for any disputes to be tracked and resolved. Customers will also be protected, since no data or images will be stored on their smartphone in case they lose their device, and all communication will be 128-bit encrypted. All major smartphone models will be supported.

3i Infotech will host and deliver the mobile deposit capabilities through a software-as-a-service (SaaS) delivery model, eliminating the need for Conestoga to implement or manage the technology infrastructure. The SaaS approach significantly speeds time-to-market and lessens capital expenditures. 3i Infotech’s SaaS mobile check deposit solution will easily integrate with Conestoga’s core processing system and will be supported by the extensive global payment processing network of 3i Infotech. As a result, most remote check deposits will clear within one hour.

Forty-two Chicagoland teachers are recipients of the first Pearson Independence Awards, recognizing them as the best and the brightest in social studies education. The education services and technology company Pearson honored these teachers for their unique combination of innovation, creativity and passion at ceremonies in Chicago and Oakbrook this past week. The awards were presented during events surrounding the visit to Chicago of one of the few remaining original printings of the Declaration of Independence, sponsored by the Pearson Foundation.

At an event to commemorate the Declaration’s visit at Curie Metropolitan High School, keynoted by U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, Pearson’s Vice President for the Midwest and Northeast Pat McHugh presented 30 Chicago Public Schools (CPS) teachers with the award. CPS chief academic officers, principals and social studies supervisors also celebrated the honorees for their talent in bringing social studies to life for their K-12 students.

McHugh said, “The Chicago visit of this rare original print of the Declaration of Independence offered our community a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see history first- and reflect on what it means to us as a country and as individuals. As Senator Durbin, the other presenters and the Curie High School students who spoke at the ceremony noted in their remarks, this important document developed by 56 brave men forms the foundation of how we live our lives today. As a member of the Pearson family for many years now, it makes me particularly proud that we were able to bring the tour to my hometown.”

He continued, “Pearson is honored to have the opportunity to recognize these great teachers for all they do to make social studies relevant for today’s students. In classrooms throughout Chicagoland, these role models show their students that social studies is more than memorizing dates or locations on a map. It is developing an understanding of experiences and how they shape the world around us, and building knowledge that will set them on a course to be effective leaders and citizens themselves.”

About the Author

Although by necessity, Barbara Anderson now lives in Glendale, Arizona, a Phoenix suburb, she explains to Westerners that she grew up in northern New York, almost in Canada, and to Easterners that she lived in northern Arizona. She claims that both locales define her. Probably the weekly letters she wrote home from isolated Ganado to rural Gouverneur fostered her conviction that no great experience was quite finished until she wrote about it. She holds a B.A. from Cornell University and an M.A. from Northern Arizona University. She found great satisfaction in teaching and living with another culture.

Small Luxury Hotels of the World, which recently opened its Asia Pacific Regional Office in Singapore, has seen strong positive growth in the first half of 2010. Indicators of success include an increase in reservations of 16 per cent year to date compared to the same period last year, an increase in revenue of 14 per cent and the addition of over 30 hotels since September 2009 which means the brand’s portfolio now exceeds 500 properties worldwide.

The upward trend across all areas of business is reflected in positive feedback from members of The Club of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Over 7,000 Club members have already responded to a survey which is currently underway. The research, which is being conducted by the brand and coordinated by PricewaterhouseCoopers, was designed to give a snapshot of consumer sentiment and to gain insights into travel behaviour patterns following the recent economic downturn. Initial findings* indicate that average disposable incomes will increase this year with one in three Club members who responded to the survey saying that they expect to be better off in 2010 than last year. Corporate travel looks set to pick up again this year with 23 per cent of respondents anticipating an increase in business travel and for leisure, more short breaks are planned over the next 12 months. When asked about researching hotels, over 80 per cent of Club members use the Small Luxury Hotels of the World website http://www.slh.com over any other method.

Whilst we have seen a shift in behaviour over the past 24 months, current travel patterns indicate that consumer confidence is returning and we are seeing encouraging numbers of advance bookings. Small Luxury Hotels of the World now offers guests a choice of over 500 hotels in more than 70 countries worldwide but, despite this recent growth, it has maintained a strict standard of excellence. Before being accepted into the brand, each property has to demonstrate that they are the best of the best hotels in their area and then each hotel undergoes a rigorous inspection process before being personally approved by Paul Kerr and the Board of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Properties are then inspected by mystery guests at least once every two years to ensure standards are consistently maintained.

Since it was established in 1991, Small Luxury Hotels of the World has gone from strength to strength with the number of rooms across the brand increasing from under 5,000 in the first year to over 25,000 today. One of the brand’s attributes is the diversity of properties in its portfolio. Nearly 40 per cent its properties are city centre sanctuaries, just over 33 per cent are resorts and 30 per cent are country houses. The average number of rooms at each property has decreased from 65 in 1991 to 50 in 2010 which is testament to the fact that, despite the steady growth and extended global reach, the brand is focused on its original proposition of offering unique, intimate hotels and highly personalised service.

The luxury hotel brand has added over 30 properties in the first half of the year including hotels in new destinations such as Megève, Monte Carlo, Split, Rioja, Pamplona, Acapulco, Belize and the Netherland Antilles. The Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) is on deck to host its inaugural baseball analytics conference in Mesa, Arizona, during the middle of the spring training season. The organization is the inspiration for the popular field of baseball statistical analysis, called sabermetrics. The SABR Analytics Conference, presented by Bloomberg Sports and Major League Baseball will take place at the Hilton Phoenix East/Mesa on March 15–17 and will bring together some of the top minds from the nationwide baseball analytic community. The three-day event will consist of numerous panels and research presentations paired with notable guest speakers scheduled throughout the conference.

The Mesa Convention & Visitors Bureau (Mesa CVB) reached out to SABR after their headquarters move to Phoenix last year. SABR hosted a conference during the Arizona Fall League last October and this gathering inspired the organization to plan a meeting of the minds in Mesa during spring training.

“Never before have as many of the top minds of the baseball analytics community come under one roof to discuss, debate and share insightful ways to analyze and examine the great game of baseball,” said SABR Executive Director Marc Appleman. “What better time and place to be putting on a baseball analytics conference than during spring training in Arizona.”

The conference is open to the public with registration and schedule available online at http://www.sabr.org. Speakers are expected to include Tom Ricketts, Chairman, Chicago Cubs; Derrick Hall, President/CEO, Arizona Diamondbacks; Mark Shapiro, President, Cleveland Indians; Chris Antonetti, Executive Vice President/General Manager, Cleveland Indians; Jerry Dipoto, Senior Vice President/General Manager, Los Angeles Angels; Doug Melvin, Executive Vice President/General Manager, Milwaukee Brewers; among others.

A unique component of the conference is the Case Competition that invites graduate students from area business schools and sports management programs, as well as undergraduates from across the country, to compete against each other by preparing an analysis and presentation of a real baseball operations decision — the type of decision a team’s GM and the type of decision a team’s GM and staff is faced with over the course of a season. To date, several universities are scheduled to participate including New York University; University of Chicago; Northwestern University; University of California-Berkeley; Arizona State University and Tufts University.

The novel is the story of Ramesh Natekar, born into a Hindu Vaishya family of Goa, who has to face the caste prejudice of people around him to the point of losing his sweetheart because of her superior caste. Ramesh holds a degree in philosophy and is committed to a life of scholarship when he finds himself drawn into the freedom movement of Goa. His participation in the freedom struggle lands him in jail for more than five years, and also into minor and major conflicts with police and prison authorities. The novel describes with accuracy the historical events of the middle of the last century and presents snapshots of the history, geography, and culture of the Goa and India of that period. The narrative is full of digressions into ethics, philosophy, and religion, along with a sprinkling of linguistic escapades.

The novel is partly based on actual events including the personal experiences of the author, who himself had been a participant in the freedom struggle and a political prisoner for more than five years. He also had the rare privilege of being present at the formal surrender of the Portuguese governor-general of Goa, Vassalo e Silva, to Brigadier Dhillon of the Indian army, on the night of December 19, 1961.

About the Author

Suresh Kanekar received his B.A. (Honors) in philosophy and M.A. in psychology from the University of Poona, and his Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Iowa. He has taught at several Indian and American universities, and is currently a research professor of psychology at Alliant International University in San Diego, California. He has published over one hundred fifteen research articles and two books in the area of his specialization, apart from some short literary contributions including poems. Of Mangoes and Monsoons is his first novel.
