Chicagoland’s Best and Brightest Social Studies Teachers Honored With ‘Independence Awards’ From Pearson

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) May 3, 2010

Forty-two Chicagoland teachers are recipients of the first Pearson Independence Awards, recognizing them as the best and the brightest in social studies education. The education services and technology company Pearson honored these teachers for their unique combination of innovation, creativity and passion at ceremonies in Chicago and Oakbrook this past week. The awards were presented during events surrounding the visit to Chicago of one of the few remaining original printings of the Declaration of Independence, sponsored by the Pearson Foundation.

At an event to commemorate the Declaration’s visit at Curie Metropolitan High School, keynoted by U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, Pearson’s Vice President for the Midwest and Northeast Pat McHugh presented 30 Chicago Public Schools (CPS) teachers with the award. CPS chief academic officers, principals and social studies supervisors also celebrated the honorees for their talent in bringing social studies to life for their K-12 students.

McHugh said, “The Chicago visit of this rare original print of the Declaration of Independence offered our community a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see history first- and reflect on what it means to us as a country and as individuals. As Senator Durbin, the other presenters and the Curie High School students who spoke at the ceremony noted in their remarks, this important document developed by 56 brave men forms the foundation of how we live our lives today. As a member of the Pearson family for many years now, it makes me particularly proud that we were able to bring the tour to my hometown.”

He continued, “Pearson is honored to have the opportunity to recognize these great teachers for all they do to make social studies relevant for today’s students. In classrooms throughout Chicagoland, these role models show their students that social studies is more than memorizing dates or locations on a map. It is developing an understanding of experiences and how they shape the world around us, and building knowledge that will set them on a course to be effective leaders and citizens themselves.”

In addition to a special certificate recognizing their achievements, the Independence Award winners will receive a $ 250 gift certificate for Pearson’s renowned social studies materials for their classrooms. They can choose from among a wide variety of resources that will bring our nation’s past, present and future to life for students, such as “America: History of Our Nation” and “Prentice Hall United States History.” Names and photos of the Independence Award winners will be featured on the Pearson Illinois Web site at http://www.pearsonschool.com/ILSS .

Small Luxury Hotels of the World™ Brand Demonstrates Solid Performance in First Half of 2010

Port Palace, Monaco

(Vocus) June 25, 2010

Small Luxury Hotels of the World, which recently opened its Asia Pacific Regional Office in Singapore, has seen strong positive growth in the first half of 2010. Indicators of success include an increase in reservations of 16 per cent year to date compared to the same period last year, an increase in revenue of 14 per cent and the addition of over 30 hotels since September 2009 which means the brand’s portfolio now exceeds 500 properties worldwide.

The upward trend across all areas of business is reflected in positive feedback from members of The Club of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Over 7,000 Club members have already responded to a survey which is currently underway. The research, which is being conducted by the brand and coordinated by PricewaterhouseCoopers, was designed to give a snapshot of consumer sentiment and to gain insights into travel behaviour patterns following the recent economic downturn. Initial findings* indicate that average disposable incomes will increase this year with one in three Club members who responded to the survey saying that they expect to be better off in 2010 than last year. Corporate travel looks set to pick up again this year with 23 per cent of respondents anticipating an increase in business travel and for leisure, more short breaks are planned over the next 12 months. When asked about researching hotels, over 80 per cent of Club members use the Small Luxury Hotels of the World website http://www.slh.com over any other method.

Paul Kerr, CEO of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, said: “We have always maintained that discerning travellers will never compromise on luxury. Whilst we have seen a shift in behaviour over the past 24 months, current travel patterns indicate that consumer confidence is returning and we are seeing encouraging numbers of advance bookings. What has been interesting is that demand from hotels wanting to join the brand has never been higher throughout this period. It is during difficult economic times that the benefits of being part of a brand like Small Luxury Hotels of the World become increasingly evident. We have continued to innovate with new initiatives like mobile marketing to add value for our loyal guests and for hotels which are part of the brand.”

Small Luxury Hotels of the World now offers guests a choice of over 500 hotels in more than 70 countries worldwide but, despite this recent growth, it has maintained a strict standard of excellence. Before being accepted into the brand, each property has to demonstrate that they are the best of the best hotels in their area and then each hotel undergoes a rigorous inspection process before being personally approved by Paul Kerr and the Board of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Properties are then inspected by mystery guests at least once every two years to ensure standards are consistently maintained.

Since it was established in 1991, Small Luxury Hotels of the World has gone from strength to strength with the number of rooms across the brand increasing from under 5,000 in the first year to over 25,000 today. One of the brand’s attributes is the diversity of properties in its portfolio. Nearly 40 per cent its properties are city centre sanctuaries, just over 33 per cent are resorts and 30 per cent are country houses. The average number of rooms at each property has decreased from 65 in 1991 to 50 in 2010 which is testament to the fact that, despite the steady growth and extended global reach, the brand is focused on its original proposition of offering unique, intimate hotels and highly personalised service.

The luxury hotel brand has added over 30 properties in the first half of the year including hotels in new destinations such as Megève, Monte Carlo, Split, Rioja, Pamplona, Acapulco, Belize and the Netherland Antilles. The brand has expanded its portfolio in the Asia Pacific region where its portfolio now stands at 112. New additions to the brand include two hotels in India, three island resorts in Malaysia, a harbourfront hotel in Japan, three new city centre hotels in Bangkok and two properties in China. Recent additions in the Americas boost the brand’s regional portfolio there to approximately 90 properties and the brand includes over 300 hotels across Europe. The brand’s presence in Central and South America has doubled over the past year. (See below for a full list of properties added in 2010).

Small Luxury Hotels of the World properties offer a diverse range of experiences – from the cultural to the adventurous to the indulgent – and the latest additions to the brand are no exception. Formula One enthusiasts can now enjoy views of the Grand Prix track in Monaco from Port Palace, Film Festival junkies can escape from the action at Le Grand Hotel Cannes on the Croisette and thrill seekers can join the ‘running of the bulls’ festival in Pamplona every July.

As well as offering greater choice and diversity than ever before, Small Luxury Hotels of the World has continued to roll out initiatives to add value for loyal guests. Global marketing programmes including Ski, Beach Escapes, Country Retreats, Golf, Spa and Honeymoon have generated over $ 8million in revenue for hotels in the brand over the past 12 months. The Club of Small Luxury Hotels of the World was recently re-launched to offer members added benefits including a complimentary room upgrade at check-in subject to availability, continental breakfast and late check-out.

To support key source markets around the world Small Luxury Hotels of the World’s website, http://www.slh.com, is now available in Japanese, Simplified Chinese, French, German, Spanish and Russian. Multi-lingual reservations agents are also on hand to help with bookings and enquiries via the brand’s toll free reservation numbers. For a full list of toll free numbers go to http://www.slh.com/reservationnumbers.html

The brand continues to maintain its position as a leader in technological innovation in the hotel industry. As well as its award-winning website, http://www.slh.com, Small Luxury Hotels of the World launched its first iPhone app in February 2010. The app is free to download from iTunes at http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/small-luxury-hotels-world/id359024705?mt=8. Nearly 21,000 travellers around the world have downloaded the app since its launch four months ago. Travellers can ‘Discover, Share and Enjoy’ all of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World properties using the app. The brand has a strong presence on social media networks with nearly 10,000 fans on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/smallluxuryhotelsofheworld) and over 1,500 followers on Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/slhluxuryhotels).

Key appointments in 2010 to date include Mark Wong as Area Director and Brandon Chan as Director of Sales for the Asia Pacific region, Carsten Lima, Director of Sales EMEA, Carmen Munguia, Partnership Marketing Manager EMEA, Helen Argent, Marketing Communications Manager, Carla Severn, Cluster Marketing Manager, Kurt Allen, Head of Online and Ande Lund, Partnership Marketing Manager for the Americas.

Reservations at any Small Luxury Hotels of the World property can be made by calling one of the toll free numbers which can be found at http://www.slh.com/reservationnumbers.html, online at http://www.slh.com or via the new iPhone app. Travel agents need only remember the GDS code LX for LuXury.

The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail winds through the mountains and valleys of Southwest Virginia, a major wellspring of American roots music and one of Virginia’s best regions for fall foliage. Country music traces its beginnings here and the area is still a hotbed of bluegrass and Old Time music. Live music venues, museums and cultural centers lie along the trail. Some of bluegrass music’s top acts perform at the Carter Family Fold, the Floyd Country Store and the Rex Theater in Galax and impromptu jam sessions pop up in barber shops and ice cream stands in small communities throughout the region.

Skyline Drive: This roadway is the main artery of Shenandoah National Park and one of America’s best fall foliage destinations. The drive itself is a worthy journey but there is so much more to enjoy along the route. Stay overnight at Skyland Lodge, Big Meadow or the rustic cabins at Lewis Mountain. At dusk, herds of deer come out to graze in meadows and along roadsides. The eastern black bear can be seen along with a large variety of songbirds.

Virginia’s Wine Destinations: According to Luca Paschina, one of Virginia’s leading winemakers, “A true wine experience is not only about wine … It’s about food … landscapes … visiting historic sites. It’s about other things that all together are a true great wine experience.” That is particularly true in the fall. Virginia now boasts more than 150 wineries, many nestled along the hillsides of Virginia’s pastoral Piedmont region. The area is canopied in color during the fall and is filled with the variety of things that make up that “true wine experience.” October is Virginia Wine Month and the wineries celebrate with festivals and special events. Try one of these three drives for starters:

Charlottesville area: The Monticello Wine Trail combines natural beauty with 22 of Virginia’s leading wineries. Presidents Jefferson, Madison and Monroe made their homes here for a reason. The glory of the countryside in the fall is unmatched. Fine country inns and exceptional dining (some of which can be found at the wineries themselves) are an essential part of the experience.

Warrenton/Fauquier County: Historic back roads bounded by stone fences cut through rolling terrain in Fauquier County, and nearly every one of them seems to lead to a winery . More than twenty wineries are now in the county and range from big and splashy to small and intimate. Pick a variety to visit – and enjoy the journey that is as fulfilling as the destination.

Leesburg/Loudoun County: This is the heart of Virginia’s horse country. Horses of high blood roam the paddocks of farms dating to the 1800s. The roads that meander through the area are ablaze with color in the fall. Twenty-two wineries, including some of Virginia’s oldest and newest, welcome fall visitors for an afternoon on the terrace with a glass of good wine and a fall view.

Lexington to Warm Springs through the pass: Lexington is one of America’s most historic and beautiful small towns and is at the eastern end of one of Virginia’s best fall drives. Going northwest out of Lexington, take Rt. 39, a scenic Virginia Byway that parallels the Maury River. At Goshen Pass the river comes gurgling through a boulder-strewn gorge where the western mountains end at the Shenandoah Valley. Continue westward to the village of Hot Springs and go south on Highway 220 to The Homestead, one of Virginia’s premier four-seasons resorts. Activities there include horseback riding, canoeing, carriage rides, hayrides and even falconry.

Down the ShenandoahValley on Backroads: Interstate 81 runs the length of the Shenandoah Valley and in the fall might be one of the most beautiful superhighways in the country. But for those wishing a more leisurely pace while leaf peeping, get out of the fast lane and onto a secondary road. Highway 11 parallels I-81 and takes drivers through the hearts of small Valley towns with antique shops, historic sites, restaurants and inns. Farther off the beaten path lie treasures such as the Dayton Farmers Market, Luray Caverns and the Andre Viette Nursery. At Front Royal look for canoeing rentals for an unforgettable fall float down the picturesque Shenandoah River.

Journey Through Hallowed Ground: The 180-mile National Scenic Byway and National Heritage Area enters Virginia in Loudoun County and winds its way south along Highways 15 and 29 to its terminus at Charlottesville. This is some of America’s most historic and most beautiful landscape that’s at its best in fall. Look for farmers markets, wineries, outdoor recreation sites, historic homes and towns, Civil War battlefields, antebellum estates and honored establishments such as the Inn at Little Washington and Keswick Hall.

Colonial National Parkway: In late fall, after the colors have crested in Virginia’s mountains, fall foliage can be enjoyed in the eastern part of the Commonwealth. One of the best routes for late leaves is the 23-mile Colonial National Parkway, a National Scenic Byway connecting historic Jamestown and Yorktown and passing through Williamsburg. Devoid of billboards and other advertisements and with easements keeping much development hidden, the Parkway is a peaceful and beautiful meander. Colonial Williamsburg is gorgeous in the fall and is one of America’s best family destinations. Historic Yorktown has a vibrant waterfront and historic homes. Jamestown’s attractions detail the history of the earliest permanent English settlement in the New World along with the Virginia Indians who lived here long before.

Scenic fall foliage drives in Virginia take on new and memorable dimensions when one sees amidst the trees a world of experiences to enjoy together.

Indian desi Girls and women seeking men for Dating and Fun relationships

0

Dating and friendships sites were not so common in india & the concept of dating itself was completely alien to Indians some 5-6 years ago

The internet soon changed that and now there are many many websites catering to Indians seeking men & women for online dating and friendship ans social networking

Most indians Online who seek such activities are teenagers and the younger generation though it is also true that many married indian men and women also actively engage in social networking and dating online

Then there is the huge population of Non resdent Indians who use the internet for making new friends and also for virtiual and online relationships

Most non resident indians migrate to other countries for jobs & studies and are most of the time forced bachelors or natural bachelors. This leads to a lot of time being spent by these people seeking friends and partners in the virtual world

]]>

Indian websites seeking to connect such people to the majority of the indians back in homeland have started launching massive advertisements on google and other big sites . This has helped many many indian men & women find plenty of friends and partners when they live a life of boredom in other countries

Most of these indian men & women are residing in Middle east coutries like UAE Oman Qatar Bahrain and Saudi arabia and other such oil producing countries. The problem with these countries are that most of them are Islamic nations and they do not allow such activities as online dating and love and friendship . Most of these governments have blocked acess to websites falling in the catagory of dating and relationships

Due to this problems millions of Indian living and working in these countries resort to online chat like skype and google and yahoo messenger and similiar other medium to connect to people they love and seek friendships with

Indian women are very beautifull and Desi girls , which also means local girls or in the modern age non resident indian girls are very smart and enjoy a high standards of living and they use all gadgets & technology available to connect and make new friends with Indian men and women

Sachin Pawa, CEO of MaharajahClub (MClub) welcomed 100 honoured guest and members of the press at the event, where he announced the launch of MaharajahClub’s online casino and poker room. The launch marked the first gaming website targeted at South East Asian communities around the world.

“This is the first time an online gaming company has targeted an audience based on ethnicity. It happens in landbased casinos around the world and we at Maharajah Club wanted to be the first to take this very effective segmentation approach online. By targeting ethnically, we can cater to the culturally specific needs of our clients in a way that no other casino on the net can,” said Sachin Pawa, CEO of MaharajahClub.

Lucky guests were wowed by the transformation of Hotel Russell’s elegant banquet room into a beautiful, 1930s-themed, Indian palace. The crowd was also entertained by classical Indian music and dancers while they supped on exquisite Asian fare. The highlight of the evening’s menu was a 6’5, flowing chocolate fountain, by Karema’s Chocolate Fountains, with fruits and pastries for guest’s dipping pleasure.

To help celebrate their launch, MaharajahClub also enlisted the help of Bollywood actors, Rahul Dev and Gulshan Grover, who toasted to the success of the site:

“May I say what an honour it is to be invited here tonight as a guest of the MaharajahClub. On the set of my recent movie, the new Bond film Casino Royale, I had the opportunity to become quite an expert on casino games, so you’ll certainly find me at the tables on the Maharajah site. It truly is a fun and realistic place to play.

But it seems to me, above all, that the MaharajahClub has a unique vision and understanding of the Asian market, and that’s what makes this such an exciting project.”

Grover, an ambassador for MaharajahClub, also talked about the importance of responsible gaming and how MClub’s commitment to responsible gaming was one of the determining factors that brought him on board.

After Gulshan’s speech, Rahul Dev announced the Asian Poker Classic, the first major poker tournament in South East Asia, which MaharajahClub is hosting in Goa, India this coming March. Dev also drew the winning ticket for an all expense paid trip for two to the match, which was won by Writer Paul Cheung of InsideEdge magazine.

Aren?t Indian women Asian women too?

0

When talking about Asian women, the first thing that comes to most people’s minds is the slit eyes, the petite bodies – we automatically think Japanese, Chinese, Korean … East Asian. If you don’t believe me, try searching ‘Asian Women’ on Google and see what the search results will bring.

There is a lot of information about how to date Asian women and their culture. But all this isn’t quite comprehensive because certain groups are somehow forgotten in this category. One of the groups left out is that of Indian women. We kind of take Asian to mean oriental. But according to the United States definition of Asian, the group also includes people from Southeast Asia and Indian subcontinent.

When we talk about Asian women dating and we generalize based on Chinese or Korean women, are we doing justice to Indian women? They say Asian women mostly date white men. In fact most “Asian women” I know are married to white men. But when coming to such conclusions, do we think of Indian women?

I decided to go onto interracial dating websites to look at the categories that are there. Most have a different category for Asian women and a different one for Indian women. Indians now have their own online dating sites for those interested in having relationships with them. And since most Indian women usually wait for someone to arrange their marriages, the internet through dating sites have become tools for empowering them to make their own choices about dating and marriage. They can now make acquaintances with members of the opposite sex without fear of social rebuttal.

But much as interracial dating within the American-Indian community is rising and more Indians are marrying outside their race, most Indian women in America still complain that they often find themselves caught between two worlds – A non-Indian man may not understand and fit into a traditional Indian family and also Indian men are hard to come by in the U.S. coz they avoid the Americanized Indian women.

I don’t know why we Americans don’t consider Indian women in the category of Asian women. However, I think it will be nice if we try and write more about their attitude to dating and online relationships, and how – even with their stringent cultures – they take online dating into the real world. How does interracial dating online affect their cultural and intercommunication practices and how does online dating bring social change for Indian women?

INDIA DATING: Meet Indian Women For Indian Dating & Matrimonials – Indian Singles Are Finding Traditional & Modern Matches Online!

Indian Singles Are Finding Traditional & Modern Matches Online!

The Internet has introduced a rise in online relationships in India and dating websites are becoming hugely popular.

The Internet has replaced the NAYAN or the traditional matchmaker or communicator in Indian arranged marriages. It is a vehicle of social change in a country where pre-marital relationships are frowned upon.

The availability and accessibility of the Internet offers India’s urban youth the opportunity to meet each another and to converse without fear of being socially rebuked. Romance, Matrimonials, pen pals, matchmaking, friendships, life partners, college mates – are all being found by the men and women of India online.

The ancient land of India portrays a landscape of vibrant cultural heritage and spiritual mysticism.

As the seventh largest country in the world, India stands apart from the rest of Asia, marked off as it is by mountains and the sea, which give the country a distinct geographical entity. Bounded by the Great Himalayas in the north, it stretches southwards and at the Tropic of Cancer, tapers off into the Indian Ocean between the Bay of Bengal on the east and the Arabian Sea on the west.

Home to charismatic gurus, prowling tigers and shimmering temples, India today boasts 28 billionaires, 100,000 millionaires and a middle class that is now bigger than the total population of the United States. A sprawling, chaotic democracy with 850 languages in daily use, 28 federated states and a stubborn caste system, India has a population of more than a billion people, half of them under 25.

Almost in spite of herself, she is poised to become the world’s third largest economy, and a powerful voice in world affairs.

Propelled by an IT sector boasting some of the best engineers on the planet, India is taking over the world’s cyber business. Multi-nationals around the world are rushing to her doorstep and superpowers both east and west aggressively court her affections. Thousands of “medical tourists” flock to India’s luxury hospitals for cut-price, first-rate treatments while sumptuous new hotels draw in growing crowds of vacationers seeking Indian secrets to rejuvenate mind and body.

The Indian miracle is among the strangest stories in economic history. It is a “jobless” boom, with the IT sector employing just 1.6 million lucky people. Outside the formal job economy, five hundred million workers wait impatiently for their turn at fortune in the Indian renaissance.

India’s breath taking land and seascapes, its colourful festivals and religious ceremonies and most of all, its diverse and articulate people, are capturing worldwide attention.

Movie-goers around the world worship the stars of the world’s largest dream-factory, Bollywood. In India, actors are the new gods and goddesses, or, at the very least, some of the country’s more successful politicians.

Bollywood, with its popular movies and Hindi Songs, has become a worldwide passion. Bollywood is the informal term popularly used for the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai. Bollywood employs people from all parts of India. It attracts thousands of aspiring actors and actresses, all hoping for a break in the industry. Models and beauty contestants, television actors, theatre actors and even common people come to Mumbai with the hope and dream of becoming a star.

Once a problem, the World Wide Web has solved the problem of Indians finding a lifelong relationship – both traditional and modern – by finding their true match.

The Internet has even been called “A feminist tool for empowering women who do not see the need of waiting for someone else to arrange their marriage, or for the groom to visit several brides before making his choice. It gives women who hitherto have not had the opportunity, the choice to make friends from members of the opposite sex, without fear of social rebuttal.”

Online Dating sites dedicated to specific cultures are growing. For Indian singles, there is IndianCupid.

IndianCupid.com is bringing together thousands of Indian women and men in India and abroad. This is the premier community for Indian dating, with 1000s of new members signing up everyday. Choose from an extensive list of matrimonials featuring local and Non Resident Indian singles interested in dating and marriage.
